Online Training – Animal Welfare

The Animal Welfare online curriculum includes modules listed below. Each individual course can be taken independently of each other. Approximate times for each course are provided. Courses may be closed and continued at a later time.

Unloading and Receiving Cattle at Processing Facilities

  • Ensure that a trailer is aligned and properly unload cattle from a trailer.
  • Discuss the requirements for handling cattle that look unhealthy but are able to move, and the procedure for handling non-ambulatory cattle.

Proper Handling and Movement of Cattle

  • Identify examples of distractions you can remove before animals even enter a facility.
  • Describe how to move animals by interacting in the “flight zone” and “point of balance”.
  • Demonstrate how to move livestock through a facility as a group.
  • Understand why an animal may become agitated or stressed, and how to handle an animal in this condition.
  • Discuss how to handle an animal that becomes disabled while already inside a facility.

        • Demonstrate how to properly hold a bird.

Human Euthanizing Practices for Poultry

      • Identify the acceptable methods of euthanasia.
      • Explain the process of euthanasia by Cervical Disarticulation.

Poultry Welfare During Transportation and Receiving

        • Explain how to handle birds before travel.
        • Explain how to handle birds during travel.
        • Discuss how to hold birds at the processing facility.
        • Explain how to inspect birds upon arrival.
        • Understand how to properly unload cages.
        • Discuss how to handle birds during a processing delay.

Humane Practices for Live Bird Processing

        • Demonstrate how to place a bird on a shackle line.
        • Explain how birds are stunned prior to processing.
        • Understand the slaughter process, and how birds are monitored in the processing department.
